Design and Application Criteria:
Book Benches, a public art project and collaboration among Arts Connect, LexArts and the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning, will retain ownership of all benches until they are sold.
GOAL and PROCEEDS:
The goal of the Book Benches project is to celebrate Kentucky’s rich literary heritage, encourage reading, provide a place for people to rest, and to instill in the community an understanding and appreciation of public art.
Final proceeds will go to further the missions of Arts Connect, LexArts and the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning.
Artists from Kentucky will be invited to paint and embellish fiberglass benches in the shape of open books drawing on themes and inspiration for their designs from books written by Kentucky authors.
Book Benches will be placed throughout Lexington for public exhibition June-October 2018. Working closely with Lextran, placement will, wherever practical, be provided at bus stops where seating is needed.
Each bench will be mounted on a concrete base with an identifying plaque naming the artists, the book, the author and the sponsor and publicly displayed for six months prior to being auctioned.
