HOW TO APPLY: Deadline for submissions ~ Submissions mustbe received in the LexArts office 161 North Mill Street by 5:00pm on Monday 8th October 2018.
Artists will submit:
Three images of your recent work. Submit printed out and included with application.
Bench designs on 11 x 17 sheets. Only the back, both sides including recessed area and lower portion of the front are to be designed. Download the bench sketches: front, back, side one, side two. Or here.

The artist who has their design selected for The Signature Bench will receive an honorarium of $1,000. Additionally, the artist will receive 10% of the net proceeds from the live auction of this bench at the Gala event on 17th November 2018.
Payment of $500 will be made to the artist upon successful selection of their design. The balance of $500, will be made to artist upon delivery of completed bench to the specified location.
Artist will be expected to pick up and transport bench from Carnegie Center in Lexington, at their own expense. Benches measure 48 x 38 x 38 and weigh approx 110 lbs. The castings are painted in primer and ready to paint.
Artist will be responsible for the cost of all materials related to completing the selected design.
If a design changes radically from the initial proposal, a new design specification must be submitted. If the design changes radically and no new specs are submitted, the artist will not receive the balance of the honorarium and will be expected to return the initial good-faith installment.
Specific instructions regarding painting requirements will be given at the time the benches are picked up. The use of acrylic paint is recommended by the manufacturer.
A panel of five individuals will review and select the ultimate design from those submitted.
OWNERSHIP: Book Benches, a public art project and collaboration among Arts Connect, LexArts and the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning, will retain ownership of the bench until it is sold.
GOAL and PROCEEDS: The goal of the Book Benches project is to celebrate Kentucky’s rich literary heritage, encourage reading, provide a place for people to rest, and to instill in the community an understanding and appreciation of public art. Final proceeds from the project will go to further the missions of Arts Connect, LexArts and the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning.
PROJECT OVERVIEW: Over the last several months published Kentucky writers have been been invited to sign the Signature Book Bench. It is now time to invite Kentucky artists to design a fictitious book cover for this prodigious book bench that will compliment and help honor the names of so many writers we know and love from our state who have participated.
